Making and displaying Chinese lanterns is an integral part of the tradition. Balloon shapes, pumpkins, stars, flowers and fish are very popular. Many traditional designs have a rich symbolic meaning, for example, the traditional fish trap shape is said to bring good luck, and the lotus symbolizes the Zen notion of living in the moment. Asian style lanterns can be used both with and without a light source, like an electric bulb or a candle. Even without a light from within traditional paper lanterns can purely decorative on their own. If you like to be really creative, it’s great fun to make them yourself.
